In the Celtic tradition the dog symbolizes a guardian dweller at the threshold between this world and the Celtic other-world. The Irish word for dog is madra. This carving depicts two inter-twined dogs one ( right side facing outwards and upright ) is seen with its head within the physical world and its body within the other-world. The second dog ( left side ) is seen with its head within the other-world and its body within the physical world; thus acting as a powerful catalyst, demonstrating the essential interconnectedness of these two worlds, and all that abides in both. No matter how hard we may try, these two worlds like the two dogs can not be separated.

In the Irish tradition, when one follows or is guided by such a creature, it would lead right to an entrance to the Irish Celtic other-world. by continuing upon this course into this realm one is assured of protection from this other-world hound.
